Generative AI, Fashion AI

From Refabric to ChatGPT emerging technologies are proving to be highly impactful for the fashion industry, potentially reshaping its landscape for decades to come. Pioneers and experts are uncovering the possibilities and challenges of utilizing generative AI to design products, create campaigns, and enhance customer engagement.

In 2018, an artist named Robbie Barrat used artificial intelligence to conceive a fashion collection resembling Balenciaga’s style. Although his initial AI model had imperfections, it garnered attention from the fashion world, leading to collaborations. Fast forward a few years, and new generative AI tools allow anyone with a computer to easily create highly realistic fashion collections with less effort.

Generative AI, powered by machine learning, has the capability to revolutionize fashion brands. By analyzing patterns in data, these algorithms can generate new content. Tools like DALL-E 2, Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, ChatGPT, Refabric and Runway can produce images, text, and videos based on text prompts, offering diverse applications.

While generative AI started with viral memes, its true impact could be felt in business settings. Tech giants such as Microsoft and Google are integrating it into core products, and various industries are exploring ways to enhance productivity. Analysts predict significant boosts in productivity and profits once generative AI is widely adopted. In the fashion realm, McKinsey & Company estimates potential operating profit growth of $150 billion to $275 billion in the next few years, particularly in design, marketing, and customer service.

As different parts of the fashion industry experiment with and embrace this technology, this case study delves into opportunities and challenges for brands and employees. It highlights four key strategic areas: product design, visual content creation, copywriting, and shopping experiences. The study features insights from brands like Revolve, Casablanca Paris, and Levi’s, technology providers like Salesforce and Amazon, and AI experts, shedding light on real-world applications and lessons learned. Please note that the rapidly evolving nature of the field may have led to changes beyond the scope of this study conducted in spring 2023.
